No Child Left Hungry: Summer Food Service Program in Southern Nevada

“Almost 1 billion people across the globe will go to bed hungry tonight, 200 million of them children.” – USAID, 2013

Not every child here in Southern Nevada receives three meals a day.  Due to poverty or unfortunate circumstances, some parents are not able to afford enough food to feed their kids and so these children spend their days hungry.  During the regular school year, school-aged children can be enrolled in programs such as free or reduced lunch assistance and Backpack for Kids, a program which provides students with healthy meals for the weekend, but unfortunately this may be the only nourishment these children receive.  So what happens when the school year ends?  Thanks to community services like the Summer Food Service Program, some of these children are not left hungry.

“32 percent of pantries, 42 percent of kitchens, and 18 percent of shelters in the Feeding America network reported “many more children in the summer” being served by their programs.” – Feeding America

Summer Food Service Program (SFSP)

The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is a federally funded program that is managed by approved sponsors such as school districts and non-for-profit agencies.  Here in Southern Nevada, one of the designated sponsors for SFSP is Three Square, our local food bank.  Working with both the Nevada Department of Education and the Culinary Academy of Las Vegas, meal sites are set up throughout the valley so that parents can pick up nutritious meals for children.

“57% of children in the Clark County School District are enrolled in free and reduced-price meal programs based on their family income.” – Three Square
