What was life like before smart phones and tablets? Now that we have these awesome forms of technology at our fingertips, not only can we call someone from anywhere, we can also check our e-mail, post photos on Instagram and play games or read e-books, all from the comfort of wherever we happen to be. With the latest innovative apps, life has become extra convenient as there are apps for just about anything. Need to create a family budget? There’s an app for that. Want to find the closest garage sale? Well, there’s an app for that. But if you want to stay (or become) healthy ….hey, there’s an app for that too!

Here are Recess’ top picks for apps that are perfect for those looking to maintain (or start) healthy lifestyle:

Zombies, Run!

Available on Google Play and Apple iTunes

Cost: $3.99

For all you zombie horror fans out there, get your running shoes on and run for your life! This app should get you motivated because who wouldn’t want to escape flesh-eating zombies? Zombies, Run! may cost you 4 bucks but it will be worth it as you stay fit while dodging the undead.

WebMD

WebMD

Available on Google Play, Apple iTunes and Amazon

Cost: Free

Whenever there’s a persistent cough or a strange rash that rears it’s ugly head in my household, WebMD is one of the first places I go to. With its handy symptom checker and useful (and easy to comprehend) medical information, WebMD is an awesome tool for those who aren’t sure if they should head to the doctor or try a home remedy.

Period Tracker

Period Tracker

Available on Google Play, Apple iTunes and Amazon

Cost: Free

Whenever I feel the need to devour every piece of chocolate I can find or else I will explode into a fit of rage, I know my period is coming. Headaches, fatigue, bloating and sometimes an occasional acne breakout will soon follow so it’s always a plus if I have some warning as to when that “time” of the month comes. The Period Tracker is a great app, especially for busy moms like me, since it tracks your cycle and gives plenty of notice to stock up on Hershey’s. Just a side note: For those looking to get pregnant, this is also a useful tool as this app calculates when you’re most fertile.

Lose It!

Available at Google Play, Apple iTunes, Amazon, and Nook Store

Cost: Free

I first tried Lose It! a year ago and found that this app is extremely helpful when trying to shed a few pounds (or in my case 20). My favorite feature is the calorie counter; all you do is input the food you ate and it calculates the calories (and gives you credit when you exercise).

White Noise

White Noise

Available at Google Play, Apple iTunes, Amazon, Nook Store

Cost: $1.99

Getting enough sleep is important to your health; studies have shown that getting an adequate amount of sleep helps the immune system and is important for maintaining a healthy weight. But sometimes it’s hard to fall asleep (or stay asleep) without help of the pharmaceutical kind which some people, like myself, don’t want. The White Noise app, recommended by Dr. Oz, emits ambient sounds that help you to relax and fall asleep. It works on kids too!
