Jerry’s Nugget Casino Celebrates 50th Anniversary
Family-owned and operated by the Stamis family, the historic Jerry’s Nugget Casino has been a staple in our community for half a century. Located one mile north of Downtown Las Vegas, Jerry’s Nugget first opened in 1964 and has always been “Your Kind of Place”, with two restaurants, the newest slots and video poker, live table action a race and sports book, keno lounge, an entertainment venue and a 200-seat bingo hall. Tourists and locals both have experienced and enjoyed this casino’s quality service and fundamental value it has delivered over the past five decades.
As many of our beloved hotels and casinos (thinking of you, The Silver Slipper) have bit the dust over the years, Jerry’s Nugget has successfully endured. The fact that Jerry’s Nugget is still going strong after five decades, is testimony to what a great asset their business is to our community known for its “out with the old, in with the new” mentality. The ladies of Recess had a chance to find out first hand just why Jerry’s Nugget is still going strong as we were invited to their Taste n’ Tweet event hosted at their Uncle Angelo’s Pizza Joint & Bakery.
Since February was National Pie Month, we were treated to Jerry’s Nugget’s fabulous pies and desserts, which are handmade with fresh ingredients. We met the fabulous Chef Raul who explained that this hotel and casino is known for its delicious baked goods and easily sell thousands of cakes and pies during the holiday season. I was also delighted to hear they make a “no sugar added” cheesecake upon request and Chef Raul has a way of making it moist and decadent so you still feel like you’re eating something sinful.

We sampled their apple, banana cream and cherry pies which were all delicious and tasted very homemade. A plate of cheesecake, an eclair and fruit tart had us sighing with content. It was fabulous! The chocolate fudge cake was to die for and the pièce de résistance was definitely the Anniversary Cake which is a five layer cake with three layers of white cake and two layers of almond frangipane soaked in amaretto and apricot marmalade. Are you drooling yet?
Who knew such an incredible bakery existed near Downtown Las Vegas! The ladies of Recess were delighted to meet the friendly staff and taste all of the wonderful desserts. We could tell how much pride and adoration the employees have for Jerry’s Nugget. It’s truly a remarkable piece of Las Vegas history and a gem worth rediscovering.
