Sports help children develop physical skills, get exercise, make friends, have fun, learn to play as a member of a team, learn to play fair, and improve self-esteem. – American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry

Due to my son’s health issues, he’s smaller than most kids his age and he really can’t be out in the sun for an extended period of time.  I thought sports were out of the question for my little guy which was not only disappointing but frustrating as well.  My son needed confidence not to mention exercise, so what could I do?  Fortunately, the answer came in the form of martial arts.  Last Fall season, my husband and I found a really awesome traditional karate and aikido studio that was willing to take my son on as a student.  His confidence improved, he made more friends and now, he’s a green belt.

Getting my son into karate was easy but finding the perfect place took us a while.  If you’re looking to get your son or daughter into a sport, whether it’s martial arts, soccer, football or tennis, Recess has a great list of places that offer them.

National Youth Sports Nevada (NYS)

NYS Nevada was founded in 1999 by National Youth Sports based in Peoria, AZ. Since then it’s grown to one of the biggest youth sports leagues in Nevada. We offer Soccer, T-Ball, Baseball, Girl’s Softball, Flag Football, Basketball, Cheer, Girl’s Volleyball, and Tackle Football. Our age groups span from 3 to 17!- NYS Nevada

With two locations (Las Vegas and Henderson), National Youth Sports is a very large organization that’s been around for quite sometime.  My daughter was on a NYS soccer team years ago and had a lot of fun.  For registration information, visit their website.

Located in Henderson, Gymcats offers gymnastics, dance, cheerleading and martial arts for children of all ages.  Check out their site for more information.  Live on the other side of town?  Don’t worry, there is also a Desert Gymcats located in the Summerlin area.

Red Rock Fencing Center

Perhaps you have a child like mine who can’t be outdoors for long periods of time.  Fencing may be a good sport for him or her.  And let’s face it, it’s cool.   here for more information.  And guess what?  They have more than one fencing school?  Who knew?  Check out Fencing Academy of Nevada too.

Darling Tennis Center

I remember having to choose between Girl Scouts or tennis lessons.  Well, let’s just say I was really into those green knee socks but if your child wants to learn how to play and possibly become the next Agassi or Serena, Darling Tennis Center can help with that.  There’s also Bradley Tennis Academy located in Southern Highlands.

Las Vegas Riding Academy

Perhaps your child would like to learn how to ride a horse!  Las Vegas Riding Academy is located near Las Vegas Boulevard and you can learn how to ride a horse like an expert any time of the year.

Martial Arts

There are TONS of martial arts studios for children in Southern Nevada so we’re not going to list them all but instead refer you to MMA Playground’s site which has a pretty good list.  I will offer you sound advice when selecting a martial arts class for your child.  There are two types of martial arts studios: traditional and commercial.  Traditional tries to adhere to the “old school” methods of teaching which could mean your child may not progress as quickly but they will earn belts and understand the philosophies and discipline behind the art.  The “commercial” way of teaching is more for those who just want their child to learn the basics and obtain belts quickly.

Parks and Recreation

No, I’m not referring to the show.  Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City and North Las Vegas offer youth sports for the Fall season.

  1. You actually make it seem really easy with your
presentation however I find this matter to be actually something that I feel I might never understand.
It seems too complex and extremely huge for me.

I am taking a look ahead to your next put up, I’ll attempt
to get the grasp of it!
