Happy Non-GMO Thanksgiving!

It’s all in the name: Thanksgiving – a day to give thanks, a day to be thankful for the bounty of the autumn harvest — fresh grown, organic, pesticide free and Non-GMO food from the land.

Black Friday and start of the Christmas shopping season have clouded the meaning of Thanksgiving for many Americans.  Parades, football and even the economy have distracted us, and so the new goal for Thanksgiving is to shop the nearest warehouse club and buy the biggest turkey and all the trimmings at the lowest price.   That often means, we don’t know what the heck we’re eating.  This thinking has taken us a very long way from appreciating autumn’s harvest.

Pilgrim Thanksgiving

We’ve come a long way since the Pilgrims but at least the first Thanksgiving feast was GMO-free.

The good news is there’s an easy way to get back to a true Thanksgiving.  Now more than ever it’s possible to break the chains of massive production and profit and it all starts with our friend, the turkey.

Think about the fact that our turkey and the holiday sides we enjoy so much like, yams, turnips, potatoes, string beans and cranberries are mass-produced just for this day. Think about the strong likelihood that they are GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms).  That means they were specifically modified to either grown rapidly or resist an intense amount of pesticide just in time to be on your plate.

GMO Turkeys are turkeys specifically bred and genetically modified to grow fat and produce more white meat, so it may look like a turkey, it may walk like a turkey but your body doesn’t recognize it as food. These turkeys are inhumanely raised, abused and fed GMO feed…think Butterball. What you want is a 100% Natural, Organic, Non-GMO, Free Range, Farm Raised Turkey for your family this holiday season.  Below is a list of the three best companies who sell organic, free-range, cruelty free  Non-GMO turkeys for Thanksgiving. The turkeys can be ordered online and delivered to your door:

Dietstel Family Farms Turkey Ranch has recently been Non-GMO verified.  You can e-mail or call to find out how to get one of their turkeys.  Phone: 209-532-4950
E-Mail: [email protected]

Kristina’s Natural Ranch – is a distributor of Mary’s Turkey another family owned ranch that sustainably raises organic, free-range turkeys.  Their website details that their turkeys are raised organically and fed Non-GMO feed, however they have not yet officially been Non-GMO verified.

D’Artagnan has organic, free-range turkeys available now through November 19th.  They are 100% organic, Non GMO and vegetarian fed.  Prices start at $6.50/lb depending on the variety.

The bottom line is, we should know what the heck we’re eating, so it’s really important to consider the ingredients on our plates.  Are they organic? Are they the freshest ingredients possible?  Are they laced with pesticides?  Are they made from GMOs?  Is the food real?  Buying a Non-GMO turkey is a great start because this time of year it’s really essential to show thanks to  companies with humane farming practices, ethical standards of feeding that sell a product suitable to feed our families.  As a consumer, the best and only way to show thanks is with our dollars.

Where we spend money, where create demand drives the market.  We have the power. Shopping at family farms speaks volumes.
