RECESS’ Best of 2013
As 2013 comes to an end, the ladies of RECESS are looking forward to what lies ahead in 2014. However, we wanted to give kudos to all that was good in 2013 so we’ve compiled a list of what we loved this year.
Best 2013 Movie – The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
May the odds be ever in your favor. We had been eagerly anticipating this sequel to The Hunger Games and boy, we weren’t disappointed! The Hunger Games: Catching Fire was released in theaters a week before Thanksgiving and wowed audiences and critics alike. It was one of the most popular movies in 2013 and tops RECESS’ list of best films. Read our reviews of other movies we’ve seen this year.
Best 2013 Book – Knocking on Heaven’s Door by Katy Butler
Selected as one of our top 5 must-reads for Fall, Knocking on Heaven’s Door is a visionary memoir, based on a groundbreaking New York Times Magazine story. Award-winning journalist, Katy Butler, ponders her parents’ desires for “good deaths” and the forces in medicine that stood in her way.
Best 2013 Song – Young and Beautiful – Lana Del Rey
There were a lot of great songs that came out in 2013 but Lana Del Rey’s Young and Beautiful was perhaps one of the best. This song was recorded for The Great Gatsby soundtrack and I can only describe it as being a hauntingly beautiful ballad.
Best 2013 Cocktail – SkinnyMom Margarita
The ladies of RECESS appreciate a good cocktail so this one was particularly hard since we had so many fabulous cocktail recipes to choose from. We ultimately decided on the SkinnyMom Margarita. Low on calories but big on taste, Toni Spilsbury’s SkinnyMom Margarita was one of our favorite cocktails this year. Get the recipe!
Best 2013 Fashion Trend – Sweaters
This year, sweaters came in all shapes, sizes, styles and patterns. You could wear them casually with jeans or leggings or you could dress them up with a skirt or a nice pair of pants. We absolutely love this versatile piece of clothing and that’s why sweaters are our pick for best fashion trend. Which sweater fits you best? Check out our Sweater Weather article.
Best 2013 Make-up Trend – Bold Lips
Our cosmetics guru, Makeup by Lacy, recommended a bold lipstick as a must-have Fall beauty product and we couldn’t have agreed with her more. Our favorite bold lipstick: Rain Cosmetics Glam Lipstick – Cocktail Hour (of course).
Best of Tech 2013 – Instagram Video
If you don’t know much about bloggers, know this: bloggers love Instagram. When the online photo-sharing sensation announced a new feature, video capability, millions of bloggers did the happy dance. Read more about it: Bye Bye Vine, Instagram Video IS Here.
Best 2013 Recipe – Homemade Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
We love homemade food! We may not always have the time (or patience) to make everything homemade but the ladies do agree that homemade is the best way to go. With all of the unsavory and unnatural ingredients being put into our food, sometimes moms (and dads) have to take a stand. This recipe for Homemade Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups is a great alternative for those looking to give your family a sweet treat without the chemicals and preservatives. Get the recipe.
Best of Las Vegas 2013 – Downtown
Downtown Las Vegas was full of pleasant surprises this year. With the revitalization happening in what was thought to be the “unsavory” part of town, Downtown Las Vegas is now home to by a growing tech and arts community. Decrepit buildings and old forgotten structures have been replaced with new chic restaurants, eclectic bars and coffeehouses and trendy lofts. There’s still much to be done but the progress so far has been nothing short of amazing and the ladies of RECESS have seen this development first hand. This year we visited the new Container Park, dined at La Comida and sipped cocktails at the Commonwealth. We held our first Blogger & The Beat at The Beat Coffeehouse & Records and mingled with other start-up businesses at TechCocktail. Yes, the ladies have been busy in Downtown Las Vegas and is our top pick for Best of Las Vegas 2013. Read more about our Downtown exploits!
