June is here, school is officially out and the summer heat is settling in to stay for a few months. It’s time to get out of town! But where should you go when you want to make it a quick weekend jaunt? Hint: It’s 1 hour, 51 minutes away and 122 miles north on Interstate 15. If you guessed St.George Utah, then you are correct and win the title of Travel Trivia Smartie!

Interstate 15 to St George

As a busy family of 5, we often want to escape the Vegas heat, but usually only have an extended weekend to do so. This tends to limit where we take our little mini-cations. We discovered the quiet, yet majestic town of St.George over 20 years ago and have enjoyed spending time there ever since. St.George is easy to get to, is fairly inexpensive and has many different things to see and do. If you are looking for a close getaway and are considering St.George, then let me give a few details to convince you!

An easy one, with the speed limit being 75 for a majority of the way. You do cross over into Arizona for about 26 or so miles, before entering Utah. You will also pass a few small towns along the way, in which you can refuel, grab a bite to eat, or stretch those legs. Mesquite Nevada is about 3/4 of the way to St.George and is a great place to stop.

The drive becomes very interesting the last 30 or so miles, with you traveling through the Virgin Gorge, in which you will be surrounded by high canyon walls on both sides. It is a spectacular sight!

St. George offers it’s visitors quite a variety of activities, including golf, shopping, local plays and tons of outdoor activities.

One such family activity that we attend each and every year are the outdoor productions at Tuacahn, which is located approximately 10 miles away. These productions are shown in a beautiful, outdoor amphitheater, with the  local Red Cliffs as a backdrop. Tuacahn is also considered the ‘Broadway of the Desert’ and is well worth the time and effort to attend. We just returned from seeing Mary Poppins and it was one of the best shows we have ever seen!

Zion National Park

And one of my all-time favorite things about St.George is it’s close proximity to Zion National Park, which is only 38 miles away. One could literally spend days in Zion and not see everything, but by it being so close to St.George, you can visit a little each time you go and I promise you that it will be worth it!

So, if you are looking for a close getaway, than consider St.George, Utah. The city is beautiful, the people are friendly and there is a multitude of things to do and see and it is perfect for people of all ages! Did I mention that they also have a Chick-Fil-A and Cracker Barrel? Now that is worth the drive!
