When the hubs called to tell me he received tickets to see the new Cirque Du Soleil Michael Jackson ONE show, I was thrilled. Not because I’m this huge MJ fan, no because this would be our second date in four years! So the idea of hanging with my favorite person child-free was all-be-it, downright thrilling!
We met up with a group of friends at Evening Call for per-show drinks. This uber chic bar sits just outside the Michael Jackson ONE theater. For a small bar, it has big atmosphere. With cleverly named frozen drinks on tap, that if I was heading to the pool I would have definitely ordered one, to the strawberry-flavored Jack Daniels sitting top shelf. I took the bartender up on his own concoction he dubbed Hawaiian Snapping Turtle. If you find yourself there, I highly recommend it.
After rocking out to Michael Jackson songs at Evening Call we made our way into the show. Well thought out details adorned the MJ theater, with touches of sparkle and flair that immediately threw you into Micheal Jackson’s world.
The thing I have always loved about Cirque shows, is they invite the audience into the action. Cleverly placed performers interact before, during and after the shows. After we took our seats, a group of four asked to slip past us. As I stood, I realized the spot light was on them as they passed us and all the way down the aisle. Standing out further, were the men dressed in full length red coats carrying obnoxiously large cameras taking photos of audience members.
The Micheal Jackson ONE show summed up phenomenal. You don’t have to be a fan of Michael Jackson or a die-hard Cirque du Soleil junky to enjoy the music, choreography, or dancing. I think the show actually made me relate to Michael Jackson. You can tell writer and director Jamie King had, and still has a deep respect for the King of Pop, and that spirit has transmuted into this production. As with any Cirque du Soleil show, you have experienced something, rather than just seeing it.
I get asked what my favorite part was and it is truly hard to pick one dance or song: there were so many great parts! The production is carefully choreographed and expertly executed, not to mention, elaborate set designs!
Michael Jackson believed that all people are unique and equal, regardless of race or culture. His message was one of unity, harmony and hope for a better world. At once evocative and enigmatic, the name Michael Jackson ONE also presents a paradox: Michael was a multifaceted artist who strove to fuse together various musical styles and art forms. It is a fitting title for a unifying journey into the world of the King of Pop, the genius, the visionary, the One.
